Texture

I’ve been fascinated with textures lately. I’ve also been working a lot with Painter and Photoshop, and figuring out how to do things in each program. Some easy things in Photoshop are hard to do in Painter and (clearly) vice-versa.

Tonight I was playing with a few custom patterns and image hoses and came up with a background I really like. I might use this for a figure painting, or overlay in another painting. There was also something I learned in this process. The slow buildup of layers through transparent glazes was one. There’s a way that this image holds together that I think I can use in my figurative work, maybe because in this piece I worked the whole piece, there was no risk of getting trapped for an hour working on an eye or a nose.

It made me consider why I paint. One reason is the feeling it gives me, another is the feeling it gives others. It allows me to explore these feelings in a quiet space, and learn from the risks I take. When I share the work I get to explore with others. I like this aspect of what I do, it feels very solid.

  1. wow, I had a very extreme visual experience with this painting. The colors seemed to fade in and out along with the textures, as if it were changing before my eyes. Nice work, very “visionary”.

  2. this is beautiful, marc; is seems to have a lot of depth/layers to it. looking forward to seeing it wherever else it appears. bex
